We are based at Cape Maclear in Central Malawi. Our present site is at Fat Monkeys backpackers lodge which is very popular place for backpackers, overlanders, and for residents living in Malawi for weekend ‘getaways’, Fat Monkeys has a write-up in the ‘Lonely Planet’. Fat Monkeys is approximately 2,5 hours drive from Lilongwe and Blantyre, which is why it is popular weekend retreat with people based in these major commercial and industrial centers.
The driving time is obviously based on one’s own transport and using local transport will take longer. Local transport to Monkey Bay will drop you off at the turn-off to Cape Maclear and the you can wait and get a ‘matola’, or local taxi to finish your journey to Cape Maclear. This is very cheap, about $1, for the last 18 kilometers. You could arrange for us to pick you up for the last 18 kilometers, or even from any other starting point but we will be more expensive than local transport.
