Thumbi Island
THE ISLAND YOU CAN SEE FROM THE BAR
The island is larger than it looks and stretches out into the lake. Apart from the just seeing the views, you can go bird watching or simply laze on the beach or swim in the crystal clear waters of Lake Malawi. We leave Fat Monkeys around 9.30am, after a lazy breakfast and return around 5.30pm returning just in time to watch the colorful sunset over the lake while enjoying your ice cold beer. There are many things to do on and around the island including kayaking, snorkeling and fishing. You can explore the island on foot and climb to one of the many vantage points to admire the splendid view. As for those keen on bird watching, the island is a great place to spot fish eagles that lazily circle the lake in hope of a meal.
Our price is US$ 200 per trip ( not per person ) for up to 8 people. More than 8 we can discuss the rate.
We also provide a light cold lunch, depending on what is available and we provide cooler boxes and ice for your drinks. You have to provide your own beverages...Sorry!
Hippo Pools
HERE YOU CAN SEE THE HIPPOS IN THIER NATURAL ENVIROMENT
Leaving from your guest lodge we cruise along the Cape Maclear beach front, round Otter point and then continue on past the lakeshore villages of Msaka and Chilipa to Hippo pools. This trip is approximately 4 to 5 hours and here you will be able to see the hippos in their natural environment. On the way back we stop at Otter point where you can swim in the crystal clear waters of Lake Malawi, feed the cichlids, climb around the rocks or do some snorkeling. We provide, free of charge, cooler boxes and ice if required.
Price per trip MK 9000
We can also provide lunch at an additional cost or you can provide your own.
Mumbo Island
THE ISLAND YOU CAN SEE IN THE DISTANCE
This is an approximate 6 hour trip. We cruise past Thumbi island and onto Mumbo island where there is a nice small beach and a sheltered cove. The waters are crystal clear and the snorkeling excellent. Again there are many varieties of Malawi cichlids to see and feed. Mumbo island is not as high as Thumbi island and there are a number of good paths to climb to the top and see the fantastic views across Lake Malawi. For the not so energetic you can just snorkel and swim in the cove, float around on our inflatable fun dinghies or just laze on the beach. Lunch will be served here. On the way back we stop at Thumbi island were we see the fish eagles and tempt them to come and feed for us and then we take a leisurely trip back to Cape Maclear in time for your late afternoon drinks at the bar.
Price MK 3500 per person:minimum 4 people, maximum 10 people (US$25 each)
The price includes a traditional Malawian meal of grilled fish, rice and onion/tomato sauce, full use of snorkeling equipment and inflatable fun dinghies. We also provide cooler boxes for your drinks. You have to provide your own beverages.
Sunset Cruises
IN TIME TO CAPTURE THE AMAZING SUNSETS OVER THE LAKE
An approximate 2 hour leisurely cruise around Otter point, Thumbi island or both depending on the time of the year. MK 4000 for up to 7 people. MK 4400 for 7 people or more. Maximum 12 people. we provide cooler boxes free of charge for your drinks. We do not charge extra for the fantastic sunset you will see.
Fishing Trips
GENERAL FISHING TRIPS AROUND THE CAPE MACLEAR AREA.
These fishing trips take you past Otter point and through the 'Gap' and will be charged at the same rate as the standard boat hire. MK 2000 per hour for up to 6 people. MK 2200 per hour for 7 people or more plus MK 750 per rod hired. The rod hire price includes bait and any loss of equipment such as weights, hooks, lines etc.
FISHING TRIP TO SIMBAWE ROCKS.
An approximate 6 hour trip where you can fish in depths of 80m or more with the chance of finding the 'big one'. The price is MK 7500 per trip plus MK 750 per rod hired.
Fishing trip to Mambo Island.
An approximate 6 - 7 hour trip to Mumbo island and a good chance of catching a 'pan sized' fish for your evening meal. Price is MK 8500 per trip plus MK 750 Per rod hired. We will supply free of charge, cooler boxes, ice, bait etc and if you require we can organize a packed lunch for you or you can bring your own food. If you catch any fish, I know that the lodge that you are staying at will be pleased to prepare and cook the fish for you.
Snorkeling Trips
With over 500 different fish in all shapes and sizes, Lake Malawi has some of the most beautiful and interesting places to snorkel. We can take you to the best places whilst supplying you with all the equipment.
